The government told Parliament on Thursday that the Indians who have been sentenced to death in the United Arab Emirates are yet to be implemented. According to the government, the number of such Indian citizens is 25. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirtivardhan Singh said this in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.

The Ministry of External Affairs was asked whether many Indians have been in jails for years in foreign countries? Also, the details of those Indians were also asked who are waiting for the death penalty on foreign soil and what efforts have been made by the Government of India to save their lives?

In response, Kirtivardhan Singh said, “According to the information available with the ministry, the number of Indian prisoners including prisoners under consideration in foreign jails is 10,152.” The minister said that the government gives high priority to the safety, safety and welfare of Indian citizens in foreign jails.

Singh shared tabular data related to eight countries, and also stated the number of Indian citizens who have been given the death penalty, but it has not been implemented yet. According to the data, this number is 25 (UAE), 11 (Saudi Arabia), 6 (Malaysia), 3 (Kuwait) and 1–1 in Indonesia, Qatar, America and Yemen.

The minister said, “Indian missions and centers abroad discuss regularly with local authorities on the issue of release of Indian citizens in foreign prisons and return home. Mission/Center in abroad also contact law enforcement agencies for early investigation and completion of judicial proceedings. The government also takes follows on counselor access and other consultations along with other countries. Apart from other countries, other countries also take followed action on this issue. Through level visits, Indian prisoners have also tried to reduce their punishment to provide their punishment.

Kirtivardhan Singh said, “Apart from providing all possible assistance to Indian citizens imprisoned abroad, Indian missions and centers also help in providing legal aid if needed. Missions and Centers also keep a local panel of advocates where Indian communities are in large numbers. No Indian prisoner is charged for providing facilities by the concerned Indian Ambassador.”

He informed that the Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF) has been established abroad in Indian missions and centers, so that in qualified cases, the migrant Indian citizens trapped in the event of crisis can be assisted. The assistance provided under ICWF includes financial assistance to Indian prisoners for the travel document air tickets along with legal assistance as well as during the return home. “
