Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has reached Paris under his first foreign trip. Carney said on Monday that it is most important for Canada to strengthen relations with “reliable colleagues”. Carney met French President Emmanuel Macro amidst the ongoing trade controversy with US President Donald Trump.
This is Carney’s first official foreign trip since taking oath on 14 March. He will then leave for London, where he will hold a meeting with British Prime Minister Kir Starmer and King Charles III of Canada.
Macron said- Tariffs bring inflation
According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, Carney, standing next to Macron on Monday, said, “I want to ensure that France and the whole of Europe work enthusiastically with Canada, which is the most European among non-European countries. Which is determined to maintain the most positive relationship with America like you like you.”

Macron said that tariffs only bring inflation, but they did not mention Trump’s attacks on Canada. Macron said, “Both of us believe that fair trade, which respects international rules, is good for everyone’s prosperity and is definitely more effective than tariffs. Tariff causes inflation.”
No plans to go to Washington- Carney
Former central banker Carney has said that if Trump shows respect for Canadian sovereignty then he is ready to meet him. He said that at the moment there is no plan to go to Washington, but he hopes that he will soon talk to the President on the phone. His government is also reviewing the purchase of F-35 fighter aircraft made in the US in view of Trump’s tariff war.

Trump’s tariff threat

Recently, he announced a 25 percent tariff on goods imported from Canada, while retaliating, Canada also announced to impose 25% tariff on electricity and has also said to convert Canada to 51st state. Trump has said that he has no intention of giving discounts on steel and aluminum tariffs.
