Kota Coaching Institutes in Loss – Ground Report: For Sale Board, Silence in Hostels, Coaching Institutes in Damage … Empty Kota! – Kota Coaching Institutes Facing Less Less Students Admission in Hostels Shopkeepers loss
The coaching economy of Kota, which is called the coaching hub of the country, is under heavy pressure. The number of students studying for various competitive examinations, especially engineering and medical in Kota has declined. This decline is not only visible on paper but also in this spleen city almost everywhere. Hundreds of PG hostel buildings on deserted roads which are mostly lying vacant. On the faces of investors, builders and developers who are moving towards loss of millions and crores of rupees due to lack of returns according to their investment.
Aaj Tak visited the Coral Park area of Kota, where more than 200 buildings are installed by ‘to-list’ and ‘For Sale’. Work on many under construction buildings has been stopped only because developers do not see any meaning in building new buildings for PG, hostels because many of the existing buildings have no specific population.
According to the data, in the financial year 2023-2024, 175351 students were preparing for NEET and JEE through various coaching institutes in Kota. In the current financial year i.e. 2024-2025, so far this number is 122616. On papers, the estimated decline in the number is about 30%. However, in reality, the situation is clearly severe. Kota has about 4500 PG hostels. Previously, most of them had oxuency ranging from 85% to 100%. Currently it is reduced from 40% to 60%.
Kota has more than 1500 mess areas. The decline in the number of students has also adversely affected their business. The PG hostel owner, whose monthly income was earlier 3 lakhs, is currently able to live somehow, because the monthly income has come down to only 30000. Kirti Singh Songkara, Vice President of the Resonance Coaching Institute, said, “The number has been somewhat adversely affected, but this is a cycle. We are trying to provide a favorable environment. We have taken many initiatives like Reso Care.”
The quota is becoming empty due to these reasons
The flood of suicides in Kota and the discussion around them clearly did not help many stakeholders investing deeply in the coaching industry. In 2025, 6 students have committed suicide in Kota so far. In 2024, 16 students committed suicide in Kota. The shocking thing in 2023 is that 27 students have committed suicide in Kota. In the last 12 years, more than 150 students have committed suicide in Kota district of Rajasthan.
The Kota Inspector General said in a conversation with Aaj Tak, “There can be many reasons for the decline in the number. For a long time, the coaching industry of Kota had become a business of earning a penny, where every year a large number of students used to come to fulfill their dreams and sometimes, in the crowd of competitive environment and candidates, young boys and girls coming from small towns feel lost.”
Many students coming to Kota from states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand feel cumbersome with the excessive pressure coming on themselves due to the huge differences in their parents’ expectations, large courses and a huge gap in the teaching system in quota. Kota has achieved the title of being the coaching hub of the country but it did not happen overnight. A few decades ago, Kota was known as an industrial city, where various small scale industries related to electrical equipment, clothes, etc. were established. But gradually, these industries were left behind as the district began to develop into a coaching hub.
Businessmen are suffering losses
Kota has been sending the highest number of students in various engineering and medical institutions, including IITs, NITs, AIIMS etc.. The fruit seller said, “Earlier, I used to transact 10,000 daily. There has been a huge decline in business. Now, I only do business of 2000 daily. The number of declines, the trading of fruit sellers has fallen badly”.
For the preparation of competitive examinations from other states like UP, MP, a student coming to Kota may have to spend from Rs 150000 to Rs 5 lakh per year to prepare for the exam. For students with economically weak background, the economic investment made by their family to teach their children in Kota gives additional pressure to succeed on them. In some cases, it was also found that if a student is unable to pass the exam during initial efforts, then the pressure to succeed is eventually increased.
The perception is spreading rapidly that coaching in their home district is quite effective for a student to go to another state, where they cannot have any support mechanisms. Aditya, a student, said, “I am from Bihar and I have come to Kota in 2022. There has been a clear decline in the number of students studying in Kota”.
Another reason behind the remarkable decline in the number is the rapid growth of coaching industries in other parts of the country. It is believed that Bihar is becoming increasingly becoming the choice of students of that state for coaching of Patna, engineering and medical entrance examinations, because parents want to keep their children with them. In Rajasthan itself, Sikar, Jhunjhunu, Churu are some districts where attention has increased considerably on providing quality coaching. SOT: A student said, ‘I am from Punjab and was preparing for NEET in Kota. A possible reason behind the decline in the numbers may be the opening of coaching institutes in different parts of the country.
Opening of other coaching institutes is also a reason
Kota Collector Dr. Ravindra Goswami said, “One reason behind the decline in the number may also be that coaching institutes have opened in different parts of the country. To the owners of the institutions, various stakeholders hope that the old time will soon return and they will be able to earn profits as before. “
