Following the remarks of American intelligence chief Tulsi Gabbard on the violence against minorities in Bangladesh, the White House on Wednesday welcomed the steps taken by the interim government to ensure the safety of all.

The White House said that the US has welcomed the steps taken by the interim government of the Asian nation to ensure the safety of all.

“The US condemns incidents of violence or intolerance towards minorities in any country in a media brusing,” US State Department spokesman Tammy Bruce said.

‘We are keeping an eye’

He said, ‘We condemn the incidents of violence or intolerance against members of minority communities in any country and welcome the steps taken by the interim government to ensure the safety of all in Bangladesh. We are monitoring this. This is what we expect. And it will continue.

‘Violence condemned against minorities’

Recently there has been a ruckus over the statement made by Gabbard on an Indian TV channel, in which he claimed that violence against minorities in Bangladesh and the threat of Islamic terrorists in the Asian nation lies in the ideology and purpose of ruling with an Islamist Khilafat.

He further said that the conversation between the interim government of Bangladesh, headed by US President Donald Trump and Mohammad Yunus, has just begun, but the issue of Islamic terrorism remains a matter of concern.

Interim government criticized

The Bangladesh government severely criticized this comment and described it as misleading and harmful. Bangladesh’s Chief Advisory Office said in a statement that Gabbard’s statements have tarnished the image of the entire country.

The statement said, “This statement is misleading and damages Bangladesh’s image, prestige, as it is a country whose traditional Islam system has been inclusive and peaceful and which has made remarkable progress in the fight against extremism and terrorism.”

It states that despite facing the challenges of extremism, Bangladesh has continuously worked in partnership with the international community including the US to resolve issues through law enforcement, social reforms and other anti-terrorism efforts.
