Good news for farmers! Government removes export duty from onion exports – Center Withdraws 20 Percent Duty on On Onion Export Effective from APRIL 1st NTC
The central government on Saturday has taken an important decision to remove the 20 per cent fee leveled on onion exports. This fee levied in September 2024 will not be charged from April 2025. On the request of the Department of Consumer Affairs, the Revenue Department has issued a notification in this regard.
To ensure domestic availability, the government had taken measures to check exports through export ban for about five months from 8 December 2023 to 3 May 2024. The 20% export duty which has been removed now came into force from 13 September 2024.
Prices fall
Despite the export ban, the total onion exports during FY 2023-24 were 17.17 LMT and FY 2024-25 (till March 18) 11.65 LMT. Monthly onion export quantity increased from 0.72 LMT to 1.85 LMT in January 2025 in September 2024.

The arrival of onion in benchmark markets like Lasalgaon and Pimplegaon has increased from this month, which has led to a fall in prices. On March 21, 2025, model prices in Lasalgaon and Pimplegaon were Rs 1330 per quintal and Rs 1325 per quintal respectively. According to the estimate of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, this year the production of Rabi is 227 lakh metric tons (LMT), which is 18% more than the previous year’s 192 LMT.
Ajit Pawar welcomed the decision
Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar has welcomed this decision of the Center. He called it a big relief decision for the onion farmers of Maharashtra. He said that this will provide relief to millions of onions of the state’s farmers. I wholeheartedly welcome this decision.
Ajit Pawar said, ‘This decision of the central government is very important for the farmers of the state. With the abolition of twenty percent export duty on onion exports, the way has been cleared to farmers to get a fair price for their goods. To solve this issue, I had directly interacted with Union Cooperative Minister Honorable Shri Amit Shah and requested him to look into the matter. In view of the problems of the farmers of the state and the need to take immediate measures for them, he took the initiative and played an important role in taking this decision under the guidance of the popular Prime Minister of the country, Honorable Shri Narendra Modi.
