Kerala has become the first state in India to pass a law to establish a commission for senior citizens. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan gave this information on Thursday. The Chief Minister appreciated this law passed on Wednesday and said that this new commission will focus on the rights, welfare and rehabilitation of the elderly. He said that the LDF government is implementing policies to fully adopt senior citizens. Kerala, which ranks first in the welfare of the elderly in the country, is presenting another example in this region.

CM Pinarayi Vijayan wrote on Facebook post, ‘The state is now setting up the first senior citizens in the country to strengthen the initiatives launched during the tenure of the previous government. As a step in this direction, Kerala Legislative Assembly passed the Kerala State Senior Civil Commission Bill on Wednesday.
He said that with the establishment of this commission, we will be able to ensure “rehabilitation, security and welfare of senior citizens” in a more effective manner. This commission will work to provide necessary guidelines to the elderly such as neglect, exploitation and loneliness.

Vijayan further said that this commission will not only create a motivational power in increasing the welfare of the elderly, but it will also ensure that they become active partners in the construction of ‘New Kerala’.
